A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test or Papanicolaou test, is a procedure that examines cells from the cervix for cervical cancer or precancerous cells.

What it does:
  • Detects abnormal cell growth and the human papillomavirus (HPV).
  • Can help find other conditions, like infections or inflammation.
How it’s done:
  • A doctor or nurse uses a small brush to collect cells from the cervix.
  • The cells are examined under a microscope.
When it’s done:
  • Usually done during a pelvic exam.
  • Can be done at a doctor’s office, clinic, or nurse’s office.
